Welcome to Wrensong Farm!
We are a small farm nestled in the Cascade Foothills of Washington, approximately 35 miles NE of Seattle. We raise Nigerian Dwarf goats and Katahdin sheep, who share their pasture with 2 llama and 2 livestock guardian dogs that keep them safe from predators.
We are committed to breeding Nigerian Dwarf goats of exceptional quality, goats that excel at show, filling the milk pail as well as being cherished family pets. After a long study of goat breeds, we decided upon the NG as it provided a unique blend of criteria we most desired of dairy goats. They are a small, tractable breed that is perfect for small acreage and easily handled by children and older people. Yet they are outstanding milk producers with many does producing as much or more than a half gallon of milk per day. The butterfat content is between 5-7% whereas many other dairy breed butterfat content is only 3-4%. It's a real bonus that they have the most charming and friendly personalities and an unending possibility of colors.
All of our stock is purchased from CAE/CL/Johnes-free herds. We will continue to test yearly in order to assure that our herd is and remains free of CAE/CL/Johnes. Update! All goats tested free of CAE/CL/Johnes 5/3/12. In order to obtain an objective evaluation of our goats as breeding stock, we seek outside professionals who can provide specific feedback as to the quality of goats we're producing. Toward this end we began having each breeding doe/buck evaluated by Linear Appraisals performed by the ADGA in 2011 and will continue yearly. Showing our goats will also confirm that we are breeding for the qualities that people are wanting in a dairy goat, with the conformation and udder that will be the most productive.
Our goats are happy and healthy, out on pasture daily and we practice a mostly holistic approach to health care. We keep a small herd, so that each member gets the individual attention they need.
All babies are disbudded and receive initial CD &T vaccinations. Adults and babies are handled daily.
We also offer quality Katahdin sheep from KRK lines, bred for weight gain and productivity. Katahdin sheep are a hair sheep, shedding their wool instead of needing to be sheared. The Katahdin Hair Sheep International website notes that the Katahdin breed has a significantly higher degree of parasite resistance than wool breeds, are naturally tolerant of climatic extremes and capable of high performance in a wide variety of environments. Ewes are easy lambers, and exhibit strong maternal instincts and good milking ability. They possess high potential for early puberty, fertility, and lamb survivability. Lambs grow and mature rapidly to an acceptable market weight range and produce relatively lean and well muscled carcasses with a very mild flavor. We will be offering lambs for the table as well as breeding stock this year.
We love talking about goats, sheep or anything related to our animals, so please don't hesitate to contact us. We look forward to making new friends that share our love of all creatures great and small!
